Coming soon to BPHS are some fun activities with a great cause. There will be a Rainbow Run, Dodgeball tournament and a Mini-THON to benefit the Four Diamonds Fund.
The Four Diamonds Fund is a charity that was established by Irma and Charles Millard who lost a son to pediatric cancer in 1972. According to their website, the charity takes care of children who do not have insurance and also assists with small expenses of the family, such as car expenses and utility bills.
It also funds the staff members who are essential to a child’s recovery. Pediatric oncologists, nurse specialists, social workers, child life specialists, a clinical nutritionist, a clinical psychologist, and music therapists are just a minuscule amount of people a part of the team to help.
The first activity that is planned is the Rainbow Run. It is a 5K walk/run that will be on the grounds of the BPHS campus. And any person of all ages is allowed to go. It is on Sunday, Nov. 10 and starts at 1 p.m.; registration starts at 11 a.m.
Katelyn Vlahos, a senior at Bethel Park High School, is the one who put all this in motion. She said, “I expect it to be as popular as the Color Run but it is cheaper and it is for a great cause.”
Sign-ups can take place in the Activities Office. Students pay $15, adults pay $20, and kids 10-and-under pay $10. Preregistration ends Nov. 7, and day of the race sign-ups are $25.
The second fundraiser for Four Diamonds is a Dodgeball Tournament. Not only can students and staff play, but so can any high school student or staff in the South Hills area. It takes place Sunday, Dec. 8 in the Main and South Gyms. It is $15 per team and interested parties can sign up in the Activities Office.
Katelyn said, “This one is going to be more competitive than previous ones due to being able to verse other school districts.”
The last fundraiser is the Mini-THON. The Mini-THON is going to be a 12-hour dance marathon from January 11-12, starting at 7 p.m. and continuing until 7 a.m. It is open to all high school students in the South Hills area and graduates under the age of 21. Sign-ups are not currently out but will be in the Activities Office closer to the event.
Katelyn said, “I want the activities to be fun, raise money and awareness for Pediatric Cancer and the Four Diamonds Fund.”
